COMMON USAGE ERROR

SUBJUNCTIVE MODE:

Sentences using wish and if usually indicates subjunctive mode. Subjunctive Mode is used when one expresses a hypothetical, wishful or imaginary thought.

The golden rule:


Sentences in subjunctive mode will always use plural verb.


Incorrect:
He wishes he was in a position to give his employees a raise.

Correct:
He wishes he were in a position to give his employees a raise.

Incorrect:

If I was rich, I would travel around the world.

Correct:

If I were rich, I would travel around the world.

Incorrect:

I wish I was the prime minister of India.

Correct:

I wish I were the prime minister of India.


If you look at the above sentences, they are the most common errors that one ussually makes. So keep the golden rule in mind and keep rocking in CAT English usage section.
